to see, hear, or know by personal presence and perception: to witness an event. or
to bear witness to; testify to; give or afford evidence of.
There are many kinds of witnesses, some reliable, some unreliable, however they do have one thing in common. Witnesses have something personal to share. If they do not, they are not witnesses at all, but rather are claiming to be witnesses while they have another motive entirely.
Presented with : a set of ideas or beliefs that are believed to be true;
Being taught doctrine is much the same as being taught any other subject. The person who receives the lesson if free to believe the message or free to walk away and not pursue the subject.
act of teaching (someone) to fully accept the ideas, opinions, and beliefs of a particular group and to not consider other ideas, opinions, and beliefs
synonym – brainwashing – forcible indoctrination into a new set of attitudes and beliefs
Most cults use some form of ‘Mind Control or Brainwashing’ to control their members.
Four tactics commonly employed are listed here:
- leadership deserves strict, unquestioning obedience
- they alone are unique in teaching truth
- salvation is only possible through association with the group
- dissenters must be strictly shunned
The ReligionNewsblog ran an interesting article about how Jehovah’s Witnesses use mind control to keep members under their control. They meet an excessive number of times, tell their members that they are elected for destruction by Jehovah if they do not accept the doctrine that Jesus is not God and that the teaching of the Trinity is a lie. They also tell them that any of their family members who will not become members of the Jehovah’s Witness organization are elected for destruction. They dis-fellowship or shun those who do not follow their rules.
In 2002, they told the story of Shirley Jackson.
Shirley Jackson was “disfellowshipped,” or excommunicated, from the Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1995…One charge was “speaking out against a brother” with regard to the child molestation, she says. She says they told her to stop associating with her non-Witness friends.
Shirley’s story is interesting and readers should go there and read the article, however, I am interested in presenting evidence that Jehovah’s Witnesses employ indoctrination or mind control techniques to make and keep converts. Two things presented in the article by James Borchuk / St. Petersburg Times was the fact that the Jehovah’s Witness require members to meet five times a week and discourage associations outside their own organization.
While the article is about the pedophilia that happened in her organization that wasn’t immediately reported, I use the quotes to show the mind control tactics used:
Jackson was also on shaky ground with the Witnesses because she had close friends who were not in the faith, she says. In interviews, Jackson and several others say Witnesses are not allowed to socialize with non-Witnesses unless they are proselytizing.
After her husband left her, Jackson continued going to the Kingdom Hall five times a week and performing 10 hours of door-to-door service each month, but she didn’t feel very spiritual. One day while going door to door, Jackson mentioned to another Witness, “When I go into a Kingdom Hall, I don’t feel God’s presence is there.”
The elders told her she had 24 hours to change her ways, Jackson says. She refused to comply and was disfellowshipped, her name announced in front of the congregation.
Shirley is by no means alone. Many others share her pain as is recorded on Facts About Jehovah’s Witnesses.
If you are a new convert to Jehovah’s Witness, I would recommend that you not take my word for this, but give the group the BITE test. If you find that many of these tactics are, or have been, used on you, perhaps you should step back and take a long look and some time away before moving deeper into this cult. God is not a Person who requires allegiance to a cultic organization. In fact, He is just the opposite:
And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29
For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. Romans 14:8
