Do you know anyone who is attempting to get into the ‘sheepfold’ by another way other than the Door? In today’s world, with Bibles in almost every motel, hotel, and lobby, people are still being pulled away with a ‘another gospel‘*other than the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul warned us of this in Galatians 1:8-9 and it is happening today.
What does the Bible say in the New Testament of Jesus Christ?
The term ‘gospel’ is first mentioned in Matthew 4:23 where we read of Jesus:
And He went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.
But it is first explained as repentance and faith in Jesus Christ rather than keeping the law in the book of Mark.
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Mark 1:1-4
Throughout the gospels, as Jesus taught, we get a good idea that the gospel involves faith alone when we see the reaction of the Pharisees to the message of Jesus Christ. They did not like what they were hearing. These men were big on keeping the law and seeing to it that everyone else did the same. They thought they were the ‘chosen’ or ‘elect’ and they did not like it when the multitudes followed Jesus.
…and said to him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.” Luke 20:2
Then when we see examples of instant salvation, there can be no doubt. Those who believed in Jesus were saved. Here is just a sampling:
John 1:12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…
Matthew 9:22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.
John 4:53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.
Luke 23:42-43 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
Acts 8:35-38 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
Another way to know that the good news or gospel is the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to read what is taught in Hebrews. The entire book should be read. Here is a sampling:
Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron? Hebrews 7:11
Between verses 11 and 22, the writer of Hebrews explains the priesthood and why there was a need for a priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek who would introduce a better hope for mankind and that Jesus fulfilled this new priesthood.
This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:22-24
The footnote below shows a ‘different gospel’ that is being taught and unfortunately believed by many who are zealous, but are attempting to get into the sheepfold by some way other than the Door.
John 10:1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.
*“It is for the reward of eternal life that every last person on earth should now be working… [Jehovah’s Witnesses] are working hard now for the reward of eternal life… making themselves eligible to receive the reward of eternal life.” Watchtower August 15, 1972
