Watchtower Society is actually a modern day branch of an old sect called the Arians. These taught, as do Watchtower followers, that Jesus was not truly God. Arianism was condemned at the Council of Nicea in 325. Perhaps this is why the modern-day Watchtower Society is so condemning of this council. The Triune Godhead was taught and accepted prior to the Council of Nicea.
When I discovered that the Watchtower teaches that Christ has already returned, I was surprised by the numbers who actually follow these deceivers. How can they convince people of such false doctrine?
Here is one way. They are able to manage to convince their followers to become “witnesses” by teaching from their own ‘translation’ of the Bible. It is called the New World Translation.
This translation, unlike the other translations used today, was not a done deal when it was placed on the market. It is changed periodically to ‘better’ prove the beliefs of the Watchtower Society. For example:
The New World Translation renders the Greek term word staurós (“cross”) as “torture stake” because Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe that Jesus was crucified on a cross. The New World Translation does not translate the Greek words sheol, hades, gehenna, and tartarus as “hell” because Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in hell. The NWT gives the translation “presence” instead of “coming” for the Greek word parousia because Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Christ has already returned in the early 1900s. In Colossians 1:16, the NWT inserts the word “other” despite its being completely absent from the original Greek text. It does this to give the view that “all other things” were created by Christ, instead of what the text says, “all things were created by Christ.” This is to go along with their belief that Christ is a created being, which they believe because they deny the Trinity.
The most telling of the Watchtower’s attempts to prevent their members from recognizing the deity of Christ is found by following the link they put on their own site from their NWT. I won’t link to that book, but I will explain. When one reads in the book of John, chapter 5:18 that the Jews picked up stones to stone Jesus because He made Himself equal to God, it is pretty clear even in their poor translation, that Jesus was claiming to be God. The Watchtower Society, however, have a cross-reference and/or link to their version of Philippians 5-7. When translated correctly it reads:
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Here is the New World Translation of that verse:
Keep this mental attitude in you that was also in Christ Jesus, who, although he was existing in God’s form, gave no consideration to a seizure, namely, that he should be equal to God.
Probably the most well-known distortion found in the NWT is the translation of John 1:1 which when translated properly reads:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Here is what the writer at Got Questions has to say about the mistranslation found in the NWT:
The original Greek text reads, “the Word was God.” The NWT renders it as “the word was a god.” This is not a matter of correct translation, but of reading one’s preconceived theology into the text, rather than allowing the text to speak for itself. There is no indefinite article in Greek (in English, “a” or “an”), so any use of an indefinite article in English must be added by the translator.
From what little experience I have had with Watchtower, they have no interest in lifting up the name of Jesus Christ and they are all in need of doing what Peter preached:
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38
