Hebrews 11:3 and Creation

Recently on a post entitled “Creation Is True”, I commented that creation is mentioned in the Bible 79 times. That isn’t accurate as there are several verses I missed. Just today I remembered another interesting reference to creation:

)”]Hebrews 10:23

By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. Hebrews 11:3

Not only does this verse from the wonderful eleventh chapter teach creation, there are two facts given that Paul (or the writer) could not possibly have known at that time in history. The words, “so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible”, tell us that God inspired these words. The human writer could not have known that atoms and molecules are what make up matter and that these are present although not visible.

The first part of the verse reminds us that it is “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God.” Perhaps this is what causes those who follow evolution and deny creation to get so frustrated with creationists. It is faith that allows us to fully understand.

Noticing that world is plural, the phrase, “the worlds were framed” reveals an understanding that there is more to creation than just what we see around us. At ICR, we find:

The word for “worlds” (Greek aion) was used to mean either “age” or the physical world, or both, depending on context. It seems to anticipate our present scientific understanding of the cosmos as a space/time/matter continuum. All (space, time, matter) were framed by the Word of God, the Lord Jesus Christ (compare Hebrews 1:2; John 1:1-3,14; Psalm 33:6,9). Note also that the special creation of the universe is the very first object of this living, saving faith.

I stand by the conclusion that creation does have scientific evidence that can be seen in geology and in design, however, I also realize that it is by faith that we are able to understand these things that happened in the beginning.
