The President is right. We need to take “meaningful action”.

Barack Obama suggested that our country needs to take “meaningful action” because of the tragic events that occurred in Newtown, CT. I agree with that remark. Most understand that he was referring to gun control. Would a gun control law be the most meaningful action that could be taken?

Personally, I do not think so. If something should be banned, I think it should be violence in the video games and movies children watch. But rather than ban something, perhaps we should add something to our children’s agendas.

I am just ‘naive’ enough, if you want to call it that, to believe that praying the Lord’s prayer and reading the ten commandments in school made a difference in my generation and in my life. I believe that children are comforted by knowing that there are moral laws established by a loving Father and that these laws are universal. It seems to me that having freedom to pray provides children with a sense of comfort and moral direction that is sorely missed in today’s world.

I believe the senseless violence depicted in movies and video games today causes our children to lose their moral compass. When children never receive any direction in the first place, how can we expect our people to grow up with a respect for life.

What more meaningful action could there be than to return to the traditions of our forefathers and allow our children to learn in public schools that God exists and that there is a universal code of law called The Ten Commandments? Nothing has to be said when these laws are written and hung in a prominent place in our schools. The words of the Lord’s Prayer are comforting and do not teach or establish a religion. They, as well, could be printed for children to read. This would be meaningful:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Luke 11:1-4

I agree with the author on the subject of giving our school children basic moral guidelines which are found in recognizing our Creator and the practice of voluntary prayer in the classroom setting.
