Was Bob Beckel right with the Scripture he quoted to Dr. Ben Carson on The Five?

Bob Beckel from Fox News thinks Dr. Ben Carson failed to submit to God when he spoke as he did at the National Prayer Breakfast. He actually quoted the following scripture from the Holy Bible.

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. Romans 13:1-2

Do you think Dr. Carson was resisting the authority of God by saying the things he said at the prayer breakfast? If you haven’t listened to his speech, it can be heard here: Dr. Ben Carson speaks at The National Prayer Breakfast.

I have to wonder if Mr. Beckel would have applied the same Scripture to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the pastor who defied the earthly authorities in Germany in his time (the Nazis)–and was martyred for it. Or to Martin Luther King, who risked (and eventually gave) his life for what was right. Or to Martin Luther and the other reformers, who openly defied the powerful sixteenth century Catholic Church. Or to the early apostles (Peter, John, James, et al), who defied the earthly authorities of their time (the Romans and the Jewish religious leaders) and continued preaching their message. Or to the early colonists, who defied the authority of the British Monarchy so they could form a new, independent nation.

It is silly and wrong to liken Obama to Hitler (as the left so relentlessly did to G.W. Bush), but at the same time it is equally wrong to suggest that Christians and other people of conscience simply keep their mouths shut and blindly obey their worldly leaders no matter what they do. Our nation was built on a foundation of free speech and the right–even the responsibility–to oppose what our national leaders are doing when we believe they are wrong. No amount of misinterpretation or misapplication of Scripture (such as what Mr. Beckel did on “The Five”) should change that. When it does, we live under tyranny, and we have no one to blame for it but ourselves.
