Jesus Christ – The Son – What does the Bible teach?

Read all of the causes below and then decide what the word of God says concerning the deity of Jesus Christ and the fullness of God in the form of the Trinity or Godhead.  We will be held accountable because the Bible gives us enough information that we will be without excuse.

For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature*, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,  in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:20

*Some translations render this as Godhead.

(Because the Triune God is so closely tied to Christ Deity, these verses may prove both or either.)

Because we know that men consist of a body, soul, and spirit and

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;…So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:26-27

Because Paul spoke of the Godhead:

Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. Colossians  2:8-10

Because the fullness of the Godhead is involved in our salvation:

But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 13-14

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,…according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.  1 Peter 1:1-2

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19

Because no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son. The Son has the authority to reveal the Father. The Father has the power to draw people to the Son. When the Son returns to the Father, the Spirit is sent.

All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:44

But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. John 15:26

Because we are without excuse if we get it wrong, let us look carefully at what the Bible teaches concerning the Lord Jesus.

Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:3

Because we KNOW that Jesus Christ was crucified and the Bible tells us in John 5:18:

Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.  (God cannot lie.)

Because the Bible teaches that God raised Jesus from the dead and Jesus said of Himself and His resurrection:

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” John 2:19

Because God said:

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

and Jesus then said:

… I am with you always, to the end of the age.”. Matthew 28:20

Because to be a sinless Savior, a person would have to be ‘good’ and to be the Savior, Jesus would have to be sinless.

And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but One, that is, God. Mark 10:18

Because we know that the Savior was to be a Lamb without spot or blemish:

But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 1 Peter 1:19

Because God identified Himself as I Am:

God said to Moses, “I AM has sent me to you.’ Exodus 3:14

Because Jesus said of Himself:

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” John 8:58

And because we know that the Old Testament says:

I, even I, am the LORD,
And besides Me there is no savior. Isaiah 43:10

and the New Testament says:

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, Titus 1:1

Because Paul calls Jesus God:

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,

Because Thomas worshiped Jesus as God and was not rebuked:

Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and My God.”  John

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse…  Romans 1:18-20

Because we know God is eternal:

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8

Because we know that Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be God with us.

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14

Because Isaiah also called Him Everlasting Father as well as Mighty God:

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Because Jesus is our Redeemer and Isaiah recorded these words:

Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel
and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts:
“I am the first and I am the last;
besides me there is no god.

Thus says the LORD,
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the LORD your God,
who teaches you to profit,
who leads you in the way you should go. Isaiah 48:17

Because Paul made it clear that when we call upon the name of Jesus we are calling upon the name of the Lord:

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved…For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  Romans 10: 8-13

Because the eternal Godhead is taught from Genesis to Revelation:

For-as-much then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device…Acts 17:9

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace(1) from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and (2) from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and (3) from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Revelation 1:4-6

Because Isaiah identified God as The First and The Last:

“Listen to Me, O Jacob,
And Israel, My called:
I am He, I am the First,
I am also the Last.”  Isaiah 48:12

And Jesus is clearly identified in Revelation as:

“And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write, ‘These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: Revelation 2:8

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” Revelation 22:13

Because we all know that God has asked us:

“But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. “As I live, says the LORD, Every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. Romans 14:10-12

*Just as the ‘whosoever’ includes all, the ‘they’ in Romans 1:20 includes all. Let us not be deceived.

The above are some of the verses that support the theology of the Trinity.  Left untouched has been all the verses dealing with the miracles that Jesus performed while on earth. These, also, offer much evidence of His deity. There are more in-depth studies that can be undertaken, but perhaps this is a helpful beginning to those who are interested in understanding “Trinitarians”.
