Famous Christmas Carols – Story Behind the Carol – “Twas the Birthday of a King”

William H. Neidlinger composed “Twas The Birthday of A King in 1890.”

I especially like what was written at Power to Change, Life Lessons about the Carol, “Twas The Birthday of A King.”  Music points us to the One who can change our lives when it is written about Christ.

The birth of a child is a special time! When one has longed for that little one, and eagerly waited for his or her arrival, there is such joy when the birth finally comes!Birthdays are often a very special way to celebrate the ways that a person is treasured. Christmas is a time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. In 1890 William Neidlinger wrote the Christmas carol known today as “The Birthday of a King.”

David Jeremiah wrote a touching sermon called ‘Twas the 33rd Birthday of A King. It is a reminder that while we celebrate the first birthday of the Baby Jesus in the manger, thirty-three years later, He would suffer a cruel death on a cross to atone for our sins. David reminds us that:

As He approached His thirty-third birthday, Jesus must have been thinking of His mission. He came to dwell among us as a human being. The great secret about Christ is that He is, was, and always will be God Himself. Thomas, seeing the risen Christ a week after Easter, proclaimed:

“My Lord and My God!” (John 20:28). The apostle John explained, “And the Word (Jesus Christ) was God . . . and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”(John 1:1, 14).

Twas The Birthday of A King

In the little village of Bethlehem,
There lay a Child one day;
And the sky was bright with a holy light
O’er the place where Jesus lay.

Alleluia! O how the angels sang.
Alleluia! How it rang!
And the sky was bright with a holy light
’Twas the birthday of a King.

’Twas a humble birthplace, but O how much
God gave to us that day,
From the manger bed what a path has led,
What a perfect, holy way.

Alleluia! O how the angels sang.
Alleluia! How it rang!
And the sky was bright with a holy light
’Twas the birthday of a King.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
