The song, “Mary Did You Know?” is a moving, touching song that defines what Christmas means by going right to the heart of who Jesus is.
We know that Mary did have an understanding of the fact that she had borne the Son of God because an angel of God had spoken to her and she knew that the child she conceived was conceived by the Holy Spirit of God, so the answer would be, “Yes”, Mary knew, but I am sure that because God took upon Himself the form of man and even grew in “wisdom and stature and favor with God and man”, it must have been hard for her to reconcile the humanness of Jesus with the fact that He was also the Son of God.
Mark Lowry wrote the words in 1984 when his pastor asked him to write the program for the living Christmas tree choir presentation. The music was written by Buddy Greene. Michael English was the first recording artist to record and release ‘Mary, Did You Know?”January 1, 1992.
All Christians recognize that Mary was visited by an angel who prepared her for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. The heresy of the Arians says that Jesus was not God the Son, but only the son of God. Mark Lowry, however, probably realizes that Mary knew, even though she may have wondered from time to time, “How can these things be?”
“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David: And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:31-35
“Mary Did you Know?”
Mary did you know that your baby boy would some day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you. Mary did you know that your baby boy would give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when your kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.
Oh Mary did you know
The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am
So, ‘Yes’, Mary knew because she knew that He was conceived by the work of the Holy Spirit of God, He was called Emmanuel, God with us, He had power to forgive sin, He could work the works of God, He was worshiped by men and angels, and He was the One spoken of by the prophets. She knew by His response to the Jews, a response that would cost Him his life, when they asked Him directly if He was claiming to be God. Jesus responded by saying, “Before Abraham was, I am.”
