Famous Christmas Carols – Story Behind the Carol – “Silent Night”

The words of “Silent Night” date back to 1816, in the Lungau region of Germany where Joseph Mohr was living when he penned the words to this beautiful song.

A time-line is available of the history at Stille Nacht Gesellschwft*. There is a link at this site to the German text and its translation from an authentic version of Franz Gruber’s version known as Autograph VII which was written around 1860. The words are different in this version.

“Silent Night! Holy Night!” is said to have had its world premiere on Christmas Eve in the St. Nicholas church of Oberndorf near Salzburg, performed by Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr. On the site of former St.Nicola church now stands the Silent-Night-Memorial Chapel.*

The story of the carol, “Silent Night” is a fairly well-known story. I would like to refer readers to another site called “The Story Behind Silent Night.”

I recommend the write up at ‘Inspirational Christian For Today’, also.

The story of how the song stopped a war can be read by going to a related article below.

“Silent Night” is without a doubt the most recognized and respected Christmas Carol sung at Christmas. It tells the story of peace and grace brought to us by  Christ coming into the world.

Silent Night

Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night!
Son of God love’s pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth

MERRY CHRISTMAS
