His letter begins with the words:
My name is Jon Voight and I am more than angry…
It ends with:
You should hang your heads in shame. You should all come forth with deep regrets for what you did, and ask forgiveness from the suffering people in Israel.
The letter will educate those who need an education concerning the recent history of Israel and why they must defend themselves today.
Mr. Voight’s letter needs to be read by those who do not understand that Israel has a right to self-defense. Actually, he could have made a case for Israel having a God-given right to self-defense if he had chosen to do so.
Not only does Israel have a God-given right to defend itself, Israel is a chosen nation. Perhaps we should all be reminded of what God has commanded and promised concerning Israel:
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. Psalm 122:6
Many hate Israel because God has chosen her. This reaction is so very wrong and shows a misunderstanding of why God chose the nation and a misunderstanding of how God blesses all people through Israel. We should honor God, obey His commandments, and consider what He is teaching all people through the story of His chosen people.
Here are some of the verses concerning just Israel (Jerusalem). Please don’t go away until you get to the end of the story!
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. Psalm 51:18
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. Genesis 12:3
But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. Deuteronomy 8:18
The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them, The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:22-27
Yes, God has promised to bless Israel and it began with one man, Abraham, who believed and obeyed:
“And through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me” (Genesis 22:18)
For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Romans 4:3
Israel began as a blessed nation when Abraham believed and obeyed God. As a result, from that nation came the Holy One of God who would bless all nations. His name is Jesus.
Thus both Jews and Gentiles (all nations) are blessed:
Galatians 3:11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us–for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”– 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith…29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
The blessing we receive is forgiveness of sin and life everlasting by trusting in Jesus, the only begotten Son of God.
He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. 1 John 5:10-13
