Why was Jesus called ‘the Word’?
This is actually very important to understand. It is important if we are to understand who Jesus is and just how powerful He is.
The Bible teaches that “…the universe was created by the word of God…” Hebrews 11:3. Also in Psalms 33: 6,9 we read “…By the word of the LORD the heavens were made….” and “For he spoke, and it came to be…”
John stated that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1. He also stated “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14
Some people who do not want to worship Christ refuse to believe that He is a member of the Godhead and that He is/was God incarnate. They look at verses where Jesus called God, ‘Father’, and speak of the Father as having authority over Jesus and take this to mean that Jesus was created and was a lesser being than God.
The Jews, however, understood what Jesus meant when He stated that He was the Son of God. They sought to kill Him because He made Himself equal to God. John 8:59 “So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.”
Jesus did not go around preaching about His incarnation. He quietly led people to Himself, the door, and allowed them to discover the Truth. When we discover who He is first hand, no one will be able to keep us from holding fast to the word of life!
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:12-13
