“God Our Father, We Adore Thee”

The words to the hymn “God Our Father, We Adore Thee” caught my attention from a hymnal I had the privilege of looking through this week-end. The song is truly a praise song and I wish we sang it more today.

I noticed the use of the term Paraclete in identifying the Holy Spirit. Understanding the origin of this word could be helpful to those in sects who do not know Christ in a personal relationship and do not understand or acknowledge the Persons encompassed in Yahweh who is One. See got?questions.org

The Greek word translated “Comforter” or “Counselor” (as found in John 14:16, 26; 15:26; and 16:7) is parakletos. This form of the word is unquestionably passive and properly means “one called to the side of another”; the word carries a secondary notion concerning the purpose of the calling alongside: to counsel or support the one who needs it. This Counselor, or Paraclete, is God the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity who has been “called to our side.” He is a personal being, and He indwells every believer.

A brief excerpt of the melody of “God Our Father, We Adore Thee” is heard here:

The history of the song is given at Hymnary.org.

The words given below are from Cyberhymnal.org.

God, our Father, we adore Thee! We, Thy children, bless Thy Name!
Chosen in the Christ before Thee, we are “holy without blame.”
We adore Thee! We adore Thee! Abba’s praises we proclaim!
We adore Thee! We adore Thee! Abba’s praises we proclaim!

Son Eternal, we adore Thee! Lamb upon the throne on high!
Lamb of God, we bow before Thee, Thou hast brought Thy people nigh!
We adore Thee! We adore Thee! Son of God, who came to die!
We adore Thee! We adore Thee! Son of God, who came to die!

Holy Spirit, we adore Thee! Paraclete and heavenly Guest!
Sent from God and from the Savior, Thou hast led us into rest.
We adore Thee! We adore Thee! By Thy grace forever blessed:
We adore Thee! We adore Thee! By Thy grace forever blessed!

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Three in One! We give Thee praise!
For the riches we inherit, heart and voice to Thee we raise!
We adore Thee! We adore Thee! Thee we bless, through endless days!
We adore Thee! We adore Thee! Thee we bless, through endless days!
