Why Elections Really Do Matter and How You Vote Matters!

Cynicism has taken hold of many Americans. Much of it has to do with whether or not the political parties do the will of the people or whether they stick to the rules of the parties. Many people are voting as a protest against the party and not for a set of values.

If we go by what the Bible teaches, however, we see what is important to our Creator/Redeemer God. He loves us and tells us that:

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. Proverbs 29:2

So why should I vote for a righteous (Christian) candidate if there is one on the ballot? I should do it because it is for my good and God’s glory. To do otherwise would be sin.

So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. James 4:17

And because…

The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. Psalm 94:21 (Isn’t this is what has happened to our unborn children in the USA?)

For many people ending illegal immigration ‘trumps’ (no pun intended) every other issue. The Bible teaches us how we treat others who come into this country is important:

You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless…Deuteronomy 24:17

We must be able to come to a right decision concerning which candidate is righteous because of how Paul instructs in Titus chapter 3:

Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, …

So then, how should we vote? I am just kidding when I use Ecclesiastes 10:2. I really don’t think Solomon was referring to the political spectrum. 🙂

A wise man’s heart inclines him to the right, but a fool’s heart to the left.

But I am not teasing when I say we should consider the advice given in Proverbs 3: 19-21, 23:

The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. My son, do not lose sight of these— keep sound wisdom and discretion…Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble.

We must know who God is and have a relationship with Him! Only then will we be able to come to a right decision. If we value the things that God values, we will seek a candidate who also values these things. If we acknowledge God in all our ways, he will guide us:

In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.  Proverbs 3:6

I didn’t say it was going to be easy and sometimes it may seem impossible. Remember Jesus said that all things are possible:

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27

Please pray for our country and that we will choose a righteous leader.
