God said, “This is My name forever.”

I AM – The LORD

God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the LORD. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. Exodus 6:2-36

He said also, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. Exodus 3:3

What is the name that God gave to make Himself known?  There has much been written in attempts to answer this question. Because of the difficulty surrounding the Name, most of our English translations use the word LORD in place of YWHW. The practice of substituting YHWH for “LORD” was begun by the Jews hundreds of years before Christ.  A Catholic Monk began the use of the name Jehova in place of YHVH.  Later it was spelled Jehovah in English. Others use Yahweh.

What did God want us to know about His name and about Himself?

YWHW  instructed Moses to tell Israel:

God said to Moses, “I AM, who I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

God also said to Moses,

“Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.

“This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.” Exodus 3:14-15

The seemingly best explanation for the name by those who know Hebrew is found at Abarim Publications.

“And it is equally likely that the Book of the Covenant, which Moses read aloud to the Israelites, contained it (YHWH) too (Exodus 24:7). But at some point in time, people began to believe that the name YHWH was so holy, that normal mortals better not pronounce it. In stead, wherever the text called for is YWHW a reader would pronounce the Hebrew word for lord: Adonai. And so, what started out as a wonderfully pious idea made the pronunciation of God’s personal name vanish from human consciousness.

The name Yah, is used in the Bible 50 times as God’s name. From the Unutterable Name we learn:

It is generally thought that YAH is a shortened form of YHVH. This Name of God occurs about 50 times in the Tanakh. In Psalm 68:4 [5, H] this Name is particularly stressed. The Name YAH is also found in the construct word “hallelu-YAH,” which means “you [pl.] praise the LORD,” as well as in many Biblical proper names (e.g., Eliyahu).

We know that Jesus name in Hebrew is Yeshua or Yahusha.**

Some say that if we don’t pronounce Jesus’ name properly (either as Yeshua and or Eeaysoos), then we are in sin and serving a false god; but that accusation cannot be made from scripture. It is not the pronunciation of a word that makes us Christian or not. It is receiving the messiah, God in flesh, by faith that makes us a Christian. Likewise, must we say “theos” when saying “God” since that is how the word is pronounced in Greek? Or what about when we call Jesus the “Savior” as in Phil. 3:20, must we pronounce the word as it is in Greek (sotare), or is it okay to use the English word “savior?” CARM

 We worship Jesus because we are told in John 1:1 that:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

and in Philippians:

Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Among the many meanings of Christ Jesus’ name we have Emmanuel, or ‘God with us’. There is a long list found at Got?Questions.org.

BDB Theological Dictionary in 1906 gave the following definitions of what God’s forever name means:

BDB states, “Many recent scholars explain יהוה as Hiph. of הוה:

  • The one bringing into being;
  • Life-giver;
  • Giver of existence, creator;
  • He who brings to pass;
  • Performer of his promises;
  • He who causes to fall (rain or lightning);

“But most take it as Qal of הוה:

  • The one who is;
  • The absolute and unchangeable one;
  • The existing, ever-living;
  • The one ever coming into manifestation
  • He will be;
  • He will approve himself (give evidence of being, assert his being)

At Abarim Publications Judges 13:18 is translated:

But the angel of YHWH said to him, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is incomprehensible?

Biblegateway will reveal that there are many different words used in the translation of Judges 13:18 other than ‘incomprehensible’, but it seems the fullness of His name is truly incomprehensible.

Perhaps this is why our Creator/Redeemer God told Moses to tell the people that I AM sent him to them.  I AM THAT I AM is certainly an indication that we are too accept who He is and understand that He is able to do all and above that which He has promised.

Below I am recording some of the wonderful promises and facts that the Bible teaches we may receive because of YWHW, Yah, the Great I AM, Creator/Redeemer. Although we cannot fully comprehend his name, we can know Him and that is why Christ came as the suffering Messiah to all who will receive Him and be found in Him.

And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 1 John 5:20

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—   Philippians 3:8-9
