Why did Jesus often refer to the scriptures by saying “It is written?”

John 16:28 tells us that Christ Jesus came forth from the Father.  Matthew 1:18 and Luke 1:35 reveals that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

“I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” John 16:28

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:18

So had Christ chosen to do so, when confronting unbelievers and Satan, He could have always said, “My Father has said….” Rather we find that Jesus most often said, “It is written…” He would refer His followers and those He taught to the scriptures or the written word.

When Satan tempted Jesus, Jesus response each time was “It is written…” Luke 4

Our Lord had a reason for everything that He did. Jesus was teaching us to look to the scriptures for truth. Those who add to or take away from the word of God are deliberately hiding the truth and the Truth, who is Jesus. The Bible is God’s message. The Bible reveals to us the Word of God.  Our Creator – Redeemer wants us to look to His word to find life in Christ by receiving forgiveness and atonement.

One of the marks of a false religion is their willingness to tamper with the written word of God by removing words or inserting words to change the meaning. If a person overlooks this they are willfully buying into deception because they are rejecting the truth of the word of God. God’s word is truth and Jesus is THE ‘Truth.’ To change the word is a very serious offense. The Bible teaches that when a person does this or accepts a religion that does it, God will send them a strong delusion to believe a lie.

2 Thessalonians 10-11…because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason, God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie…

I write this as a reminder of the dangers of adding to or taking away from the word of God.
