A New Look at the Biblical Teaching Called ‘The Trinity.’

THE TRINITY – HOW CAN IT BE?

Recently I heard Brother Jerry Atkins tell about two facts that help him understand the Trinity.  I had never heard anyone give these two truths as proof of the Trinity before.

Trinity means the unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as three persons in one Godhead. The Holy Trinity is One God united in three persons.  Christians understand that even though the word ‘Trinity’ is not in the Bible, the concept is there and our Creator/Redeemer God exists as a trinity – Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

Here is what Brother Atkins had to say on the subject. He stated that two things, other than the scriptures such as John 1:1, Colossians 1:15-20, Philippians 2:5-11 which clearly teach that Jesus was God incarnate, help him understand the Trinity.

  • 1) One was the fact that God divided time into periods or spaces. During the period prior to Jesus life on earth, God revealed Himself as the Father who taught Israel the law and who sent prophets into the world. During the period when Christ Jesus our Lord lived upon earth, God revealed Himself through the Son who was His express image and who showed us the love, mercy, and grace of God. During the period after Christ (also the period in which you and I live), God is revealing Himself through the Holy Spirit who came to convict and to help, to indwell and to instruct those who receive Christ.
  • 2) Reverend Atkins stated that the other fact that helps him understand and know that there is a Trinity is the fact that when he was obedient and entered the New Covenant, as he knelt before Christ confessing his own sin, he received all three, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God (YWHW) became his heavenly (Father), his Savior, Redeemer (Son), and his Helper and Teacher (Holy Spirit).

There are religious groups who deny the Trinity. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society go so far as to call Christians “idol worshipers” because we worship Jesus Christ. Their members call Christians, Trinitarians, and not Christians.)

They also have rewritten the Bible and added words and changed meanings to cause their own translation, New World Translation, to support their doctrine. Their defense in doing this is that they want the Bible to be “accurate.” To them accuracy means denying the Trinity so that all scriptures that prove Christ is God incarnate have been rewritten. They tell their members that the word of God as preserved through the ages, the Bible through which God has revealed Himself (YWHW), was deliberately sabotaged to teach the Trinity. To me this indicates that they do not believe Isaiah 40:8 and also do not trust God to have preserved His word.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8

Here are three examples of how Watchtower Bible and Tract Society have rewritten important passages:

John 1:1 actually reads:

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Watchtower Bible and Tract Society added one tiny word to this verse and changed the capitalization of the word God. They changed it to read “…and the word was a god.”

Colossians 1:16 says of Christ Jesus the Son:

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

Watchtower Bible and Tract Society added the word “other” making it read “all other things were created by him.” Here is what they wrote:

because by means of him all other things were created in the heavens and on the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. (notice they also changed the words from principalities and powers to governments and authorities. This waters down the power of the words and seems to give a sense of earthly strength rather than the power Christ has over the forces of evil in this world.)

Another place where they have changed the scriptures is Luke 1:34 which tells of the angel coming to Mary and telling her she is to have a child. The word actually reads:

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

Watchtower Bible and Tract Society changed the tense to place Mary’s virginity in question and caused it to read:

But Mary said to the angel: “How is this to be, since I am not having sexual relations with a man?” Luke 1:34

A different translation they wrote earlier had her saying, “…seeing I am not married.”

They have rewritten the Bible several times with changes each time to better fit their doctrine. Each time they claim to know that the original manuscripts support their religion. The truth of the early manuscripts can be read at Gateway Bible for those who want to know.
