Can a person be deceived accidentally? No, that is impossible because deception is the act of misleading another through intentionally false statements or fraudulent actions. Also, the Bible teaches us that those deceived, are deceived because of their unwillingness to love and receive the TRUTH.
2 Thessalonians 8-12 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
There are several places in the Bible where God tells us exactly what and who we must love to LOVE THE TRUTH. Jesus said:
John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
It is not a difficult concept. Jesus, the living Word is truth and the Bible, the written word is truth. Look anywhere else for the truth and you will be deceived. Satan often deceives religious people. He often appears deceptively as an angel of light. He uses counterfeit ministers who seem genuine, but are actually fraudulent deceivers. We do have a place of safety, however. Deception can only happen to those who are willing to turn away from either the Living Word, Christ Jesus, or the written word, the Holy Bible. When a person does this, they step outside of the hedge that God places around those who love Him.
2Thessalonians 3:3 But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
Is everyone deceived at one time or another? Apparently everyone who lives, if they live long enough, can be deceived in some way, but not for a lifetime. I say this because of phrases like this one found in Revelation 18:23 “…and all nations were deceived by your sorcery. ”
Why is spiritual deception so dangerous? Deception from Satan ALWAYS leads people away from Jesus Christ who is our only hope. Matthew 12:21
2 Corinthians 11:2 “But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”
There are actually active religious groups that claim to believe in Christ who are deceived because they have not placed complete trust in the gospel of Jesus Christ and because they are willing to look outside of the Bible for truth. Below is just one example. There are others, but Watchtower may be the most wide-spread.
Watchtower Bible and Tract Society Prophecy
Deuteronomy 18:22 When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
There are millions who still believe Watchtower is the word of Jehovah and that Christ is reigning through the organization rather than His church. They are deceived because they choose to believe Watchtower over the words in the Holy Bible and they are willing to align themselves with an organization that adds to or takes away from the Holy Scriptures.
They do not acknowledge that God does not change and prophecy is declared from the beginning, so it cannot be wrong or changed.
Declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ Isaiah 46:10
If you have been deceived, there is an organization offering help. You must be willing to risk going against the ‘doctrine’ of the Watchtower and read something written by a former JW.
Sadly, most are not willing because they believe truth is found in Watchtower. They continue to place Watchtower doctrine above the Holy Bible, and therefore they remain deceived.
We do not need to fear deception. It can be avoided. We only need to cling to the word of God – the Living Word and the written word.
