Comparing Tenet 1 of Watchtower with the words of the Holy Bible –

(My plan for the next 24 posts is to examine each tenet of Watchtower in light of the word of God as found in the Holy Bible.)

At wit.irr.org, we find 24 tenets of Watchtower.

WATCHTOWER CLAIMS

Here is the first one (these are Watchtower’s words – not mine!)

Tenet 1. The Bible is God’s word but was corrupted by scribes who omitted the divine name Jehovah from the Christian Greek Scriptures (the New Testament) and by translators who distorted the Bible’s doctrines.

The above tenet shows how Watchtower views the scriptures.

THE BIBLE TEACHES

John 17:17 ... God's Word is Truth | Jehovah: The Most High ...

Did God preserve His word so that mankind through the ages could be sanctified by God’s truth? I find that the Bible says “Yes!”

Every word of God proves true; He is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Proverbs 30:5

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

HOW WATCHTOWER AND THE BIBLE DISAGREE

Watchtower teaches that the Bible is true and is God’s word, but the Scribes and others who copied from the original manuscripts “made small errors.” Christians disagree that errors were made. How could anyone teach and believe Proverbs 30:5 if God’s word has errors?

If you want to join Jehovah’s Witness – you must believe that two of the translation errors were made in John 1:1 and Colossians 1:3.

Also, Jehovah’s Witnesses believe Watchtower Governing Board writes the word of God. Of course there are other sects or cults that do similar things. Mormons believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. Muslims believe the Quran to be the word of God. The Catholic religion has books that are not accepted by Protestant Christians.

The Bible is, however, the only book that has withstood the tests of time, history, and fulfilled prophecy.

Therefore:

CHRISTIANS BELIEVE THE BIBLE

The Holy Bible says:

8 The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8 English  Standard Version (ESV)

Christians trust that God (Yahweh, Jehovah) inspired Isaiah to write that His word will stand forever.

Christians believe that Matthew 5:18 is true.

For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

The Bible is  powerful and instructive only if we can trust that God has preserved His word as He intended it, can we instruct our children in the following ways:

How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. Psalm 119:9

As for God, His way is perfect:
The Lord’s word is flawless;
He shields all who take refuge in Him. Psalm 18:30

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away. Matthew 24:35

The prophet Isaiah taught that those who go outside the word are in darkness…

Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

WATCHTOWER BELIEVES THE GOVERNING BOARD

Jehovah’s Witnesses say they believe the Bible as it has been preserved. That is hard to grasp, however, because they also believe the men who are on the governing board of Watchtower who sometimes change the doctrine of the church. (governing board of Watchtower).*

*Watchtower offer a Bible they call the New World Translation. It was not even available until the 20th century and in it are changes to the scriptures (They say the changes are minor. I disagree) The NWT continues to be revised on a regular schedule. –

The scriptures that the Apostle Paul records were God breathed and have never changed because God does not change. The Bible says He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

CONCLUSION

I believe Tenet one is the first step of leading members into heresy. (The first thing a religion or cult must do to turn people away from the living God and into heresy is to shake their faith in the Bible as being the inspired, inerrant word of God.) When a person believes the Bible, they will stay in the true ‘Way.’ While JWs say they believe the Bible, they strongly disagree with Christians concerning the translations that have been used through the ages, especially about what the Bible says concerning Jesus, the resurrection, and salvation.
