Does Jesus say, “I Am God?”

DOES JESUS EVER SAY, “I AM GOD?”

JESUS SAID, “I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD”

Jesus made seven ‘I Am’ statements in John which are discussed by Jack Kelly on Grace thru Faith.

What do these statements mean and what was Jesus saying to us?

Having recently heard Pastor Denis McBride at Campus Church in Pensacola, FL preach on this statement of Christ, “I am the light of the world” I want to share his thought and consider the impact of the words.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Pastor Denis shared his experience of being closed in a cellar in total darkness as a child and the fear it brought.

Imagine going from total darkness to complete light. Following Jesus Christ means that kind of difference spiritually! Those who try to navigate life without following Christ are walking in complete blindness. Wow! Who would walk in darkness when light is available?

JESUS IS THE LAMP or THE GLORY OF GOD IN REVELATION

Jesus will be the light of the world for all eternity:

23 And the city has no need for sun or moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 By its light the nations will walk, and into it the kings of the earth will bring their glory. 25 Its gates will never be shut at the end of the day, because there will be no night there. Revelation 21:23-25

GOD’S GLORY SHINES FROM CHRIST’S FACE

The writer of Hebrews indicates that when those on earth saw Christ face, or when we see Him with spiritual eyes, we see the glory and light of God.

“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6). Jesus Christ, the Son, is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being … (Heb.1:3).

WAS JESUS SAYING THAT HE IS GOD?

One of His closest disciples seemed to think so. Check out what John wrote:

1 John 1:5 5 And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

That is how it sounds to me.
