Christians believe entrance into the kingdom of God is by new birth (John 3:5). Watchtower’s Jehovah’s Witnesses, who disagree with what they call Christendom, teach their members that many cannot teach properly about God’s Kingdom. Christians believe in salvation by grace through faith in Christ as taught in the New Testament. Watchtower seems to disagree with this, also, because they have written (and I quote from their official site) “they (watchtower clearly refers to Christians here) preach feel-good sermons about forgiveness of sins and faith in Jesus.”

I write this post with the hope that many who are ‘Jehovah Witnesses’ will read the scriptures given and consider God’s Holy Word as opposed to what is written on the official website of Watchtower concerning the gospel and salvation through Jesus Christ alone.

I found very little on their site teaching the gospel and nothing that teaches the verses concerning the gospel and salvation given in context. Here are excerpts copied from JW’s website:

“Those who do not understand what the Kingdom is —and there are many— cannot accurately teach others about it. Instead, they preach feel-good sermons about forgiveness of sins and faith in Jesus. They also seek to win converts through social work or by building hospitals, schools, and homes for the poor. While such efforts may boost church membership, they do not produce true Christians who sincerely seek to live in harmony with what Jesus taught…”(After this paragraph, Watchtower writes several paragraphs telling how Christians are failing) then begin to advertise their magazine…”This magazine, the full title of which is The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom, is now published in 185 languages and has a circulation of more than 42 million copies each issue. The companion magazine, Awake!, which also publicizes the Kingdom, is published in 83 languages and has a circulation of about 40 million copies each issue.”

Watchtower tells about their NWT and then they go into a long speech about end-times. Not once do they share the gospel in this section! 😢😢😢

In the glossary on website I was able to locate the following definition concerning the gospel.

“Greek word eu·ag·geʹli·on, meaning “good news.” (Mt 4:23; 24:14; Mr 1:14) As used in the Bible, the gospel, or good news, refers to the message about the Kingdom of God and of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ.”

The above  seems to be as close as they come to giving the gospel. They have written volumes of doctrine and do acknowledge that Jesus death and resurrection is “beneficial” to many, but in searching from their teachings on ‘gospel’ the results leave out the heart of the gospel, that forgiveness is only by faith in the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ who is the only Begotten Son of God. (There are hundreds of thousands of pages of written doctrine, and it would be impossible for me to find everything they have written, but I can say it wasn’t turned up in my searches.)

The Bible teaches:

The word gospel, meaning ‘good news’, is mentioned 95 times in the New Testament! It is referred to as the ‘gospel of the Kingdom,’ ‘the gospel of God,’ ‘the gospel of Jesus Christ,’ ‘the gospel of the grace of God,’ ‘the gospel of peace,’ ‘the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ,’ and ‘the everlasting gospel.’

The Holy Bible clearly describes the gospel in two places. Once in Peter’s writings and once in Paul’s:

1 Peter:1:18 For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19 BUT WITH THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was revealed in these last times for you. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. 22 Since you have purified yourselves by your obedience to the truth,  so that you show sincere brotherly love for each other, from a pure  heart love one another constantly,  23 BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN— NOT OF PERISHABLE SEED, BUT OF IMPERISHABLE  — through the living and enduring WORD OF GOD 24 For “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25  but THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER. AND THIS IS THE GOSPEL THAT WAS PROCLAIMED TO YOU.

1 Corinthians 15:1 Now I make known to you, brothers, the gospel that I proclaimed to you, which also you received, in which you also stand, 2 by which you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I proclaimed to you; otherwise you have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you in the foremost what also I received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6 Thereafter He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, the greater part of whom remain until now, although some have fallen asleep. 7 Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 And last of all, He appeared also to me, as to one of untimely birth.

Power of the gospel:

2 Titus 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

Paul’s declarations:

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

1 Thessalonians 1:5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

God’s warnings through Paul concerning the gospel:

Galatians 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

2 Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Other teachings concerning the gospel:

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the One having blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world for us to be holy and blameless before Him, in love 5 having predestined us for divine adoption as sons to Himself through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He has freely given us in the Beloved One, 7 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He lavished upon us in all wisdom and understanding, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will according to His pleasure, which He purposed in Him 10 for the administration of the fullness of the times, to bring together all things in Christ—the things in the heavens and the things upon the earth— 11 in Him, in whom also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of the One working all things according to the counsel of His will 12 for us, the ones having first trusted in Christ, to be to the praise of His glory, 13 in whom you also, having heard the word of truth, the gospel your of salvation, in whom also having believed you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance to the redemption of the acquired possession, to the praise of His glory.

Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias (Isaiah) saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

We are commanded:

Mar 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Romans 1:15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. 16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, then to the Greek. 17For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”…

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

In understanding this gospel, or good news, there are other related passages we need to know. Throughout the Bible, we are taught that YHWH is our Savior and Redeemer and that He saves us through the Savior, Messiah, Christ Jesus the Lord, His only begotten Son. Here are verses that Christians believe. Watchtower’s Jehovah’s Witnesses teach their members that we (Christians) teach (and I quote) “they preach feel-good sermons about forgiveness of sins and faith in Jesus.” I want to say that we do believe and teach that Jesus died for our sins, that His blood cleanses us from all unrighteousness, and that through faith in Christ our sins are forgiven and not counted against us. I, we, believe this to be true because it is written in the Holy Bible:

Romans 4…7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man whose sin  the Lord will never count against him.”

Titus 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, except anyone be born from above, he is not able to see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus says to Him, “How is a man able to be born, being old? Is he able to enter into the womb of his mother a second time, and to be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless anyone be born of water and of the Spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God….16 For God so loved the world that He gave the only begotten Son, so that everyone believing in Him should not perish, but should have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 The one believing in Him is not judged, but the one not believing already has been judged, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Romans 10:9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

The Old Testament gives us the law and prophets and teaches us that our Creator God is a God who loves His people and has a plan for their redemption.

The New Testament introduces mankind to Jesus Christ the Messiah and the New Covenant. Here we find the gospels, the fulfillment of God’s Covenant plan to save mankind from sin and death, and the Revelation of Christ.

Christians believe we are saved by God and He enables us to do good works, not saved by good works. It is our faith that endures if we are born again and placed ‘in Christ.’

Jesus tells us that we must be born again and that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life. John taught that we must repent and believe the gospel, turn from going our way and go the way of the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul, Peter and the apostles taught that we are saved by grace through faith in the shed blood of Christ and the resurrection.  They taught this is not of ourselves, but a gift of God. It does feel good, once we realize that salvation is of the Lord. It doesn’t come from our works or from an organization, it comes from God.

John 6:47 Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.

  1. jlue says:

1 John 2:1 “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world…”

  2. jlue says:

Galatians 2:17 But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ, we ourselves are found to be sinners, does that make Christ a minister of sin? Absolutely not! 18 If I rebuild what I have already torn down, I prove myself to be a lawbreaker. 19 For through the Law I died to the Law so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness comes through the Law, Christ died for nothing.”
