Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil…Ephesians 6:11
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Galatians 3:27
In Christ, God provides defensive armor to His children! Then He gives the Sword of the Spirit for defense!
TRUTH – BELT – The belt holds the rest of our armor in place. Without the TRUTH (CHRIST AND THE GOSPEL) the other armor listed by Paul is useless. We must have the TRUTH as our foundation. The truth is that we are dead in trespasses and sin. Dead men cannot do anything to save themselves. That is why Christ, who is the Truth, and the truth of the gospel is so precious. Truth has already prevailed, but we must believe and receive Christ as our propitiation for sin.
Jesus says to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father, if not by Me. John 14:6
RIGHTEOUSNESS – BREASTPLATE – The breastplate protects the heart or our life source. CHRIST is our RIGHTEOUSNESS. Without the righteousness of Christ the battle against evil is lost. Christ fulfilled all righteousness and He imputes His righteousness to those who trust Him.
It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. 1 Corinthians 1:30
PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE – SHOES – We are to be prepared to go and share the gospel of Christ’s birth, sinless sacrificial life, death, and resurrection. This takes many long hours of prayer and study to be prepared. Satan has been busy, not only tempting people to sin, but inventing religions that lead people to believe there is some way to deal with sin other than the way of the cross and the saving grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Isaiah 52:7
Satan lies and is the father of lies.
Satan wants us to either not know we are lost OR to believe we can do something to save ourselves. Either way, the person is lost.
Satan doesn’t care if a person is religious. He just does not want a person to believe God and trust Christ. We must remember that we were dead in trespasses and sin until Christ rescued us. There is no other name given but “..the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, , …He is ‘The stone…builders rejected …Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” Christians must know this by experience and by faith and be prepared as they go out. Otherwise they will be like a reed shaken by the wind. So be prepared by knowing and understanding that peace with God is only possible through Christ Jesus!
FAITH – SHIELD – The shield of faith quenches the fiery darts of evil that come against us. Satan arranges for all sorts of accusations, threats, troubling thoughts, and wrong ideas to attack us. He will appear as light and his people appear as sheep, but they are ravenous wolves in sheep’s clothing. Faith enables us to cling to the Word of Life and not waver. When we believe ALL that is written, faith enables us to avoid the pitfalls of false religions and wrong ideas. We learn to hold on to the phrase “It is written.” When we believe God’s word, have faith in God and the gospel of Jesus Christ, all these fiery darts die.
So we, too, have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. Galatians 2:16
SALVATION – HELMET – The teaching that we are safe in Christ and no one can snatch us from His hand is attacked by Satan constantly. The helmet of salvation, however, once it is in place, prevents any enemy from succeeding in taking away the life we have in Christ.
Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
SPIRIT – SWORD – A sword is an offensive weapon. We will sometimes have to fight back against evil. This is why we are to be filled with the Spirit. This sword, the Spirit of God, is actually the only offensive weapon in our armor. The Spirit has great power to help us, direct us and deliver us from evil. It was the Spirit of the Lord who caught away Philip, who prevented Paul from going to Asia in Acts 16:7, and who did many other things. Prophesy and wisdom come through the Spirit. Through Him, we come to know God’s love for us “because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5). The Holy Spirit convicts of sin and guilt and He is our ever present help.
To live a successful Christian life, we are to keep God’s armor on and to pray at all times. This is how we can overcome the evil one.
Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints…Ephesians 6:18
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26
