THIS IS A QUESTION ONE CANNOT AFFORD TO ANSWER INCORRECTLY
Come unto me, all (ye) that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
Here the Greek word Δεῦτε is translated ‘come.’ It was translated ‘follow’ in Matthew 4:19. In Revelation 19:17, it’s translated as ‘gather.’ ‘Come’ implies moving from where you are to another place. We can also “come” to an understanding in our hearts and minds to accept a belief or truth. In Christ Jesus’s case it is a truth because He is Truth.
An important bit of information is found in John 6.
And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. John 6:65
Coming to Christ is initiated by the Father, who draws those who will follow His Son. Those who want mercy and salvation should ask, coming to Christ in repentance and faith. When we realize sin has separated us from God, we turn from trying to save ourselves and from going our own way and turn to Christ, accepting who He is and all He has done for us.
The thief on the cross asked Jesus to remember him. The publican in the synagogue asked The Lord to be merciful to him because he recognized he was a sinner. Jesus told the woman at the well she should ask and receive Living Water.
“…you have not, because you ask not. James 4:2
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11:29
TO WHOM WAS JESUS SPEAKING
Jesus spoke most often to the Jews who were burdened with the weight of religion and the law. They had very little rest as their religion demanded works and rituals and the devout knew God would someday send the Messiah. He spoke to Gentiles who were in turmoil because they knew sin had separated them from having peace with God. So the appeal was to ALL who hear. Our Father draws us and His Spirit convicts us of sin in our lives.
The answer is to do what Nicodemus, Thomas, the Ethiopian Ennuch, and thousands of others did as written in the Bible. Come to Jesus believing His words and seeking to know Him. Nicodemus and Thomas were able to go to Jesus physically, however the major change in their lives was their coming to a realization of who Jesus is and why He came to earth.
WHAT DOES JESUS OFFER
Jesus offers peace with God – forgiveness of sin, justification before the Father, and eternal life.
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:..Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Romans 5:1,9
Jesus’s true disciples came to Him to hear Him. They listened carefully to His words. This coming involved a radical life change. They left all they had and followed Jesus. They stopped trusting in the law. They stopped trying on their own. They followed Jesus and accepted His teaching. When the Lord taught that to follow Him a person must accept Him as the Bread of Life (See John Chapter 6), many turned back from following Him. He asked the twelve if they, too, would turn away.
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. John 6:68
Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me. John 14:1
Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24
HOW DOES A PERSON COME TO JESUS?
A person comes to Jesus as Nicodemus did, seeking to know the truth (John 3) A person comes to Jesus as the Centurion whose child was dying came, in faith. A person come as the blind man came, realizing his blindness and asking to see. A person comes believing!
“And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.” John 9:38
One comes to Christ just as they are, casting aside everything and following Jesus as the man described in Mark 10:50
And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. Mark 10:59
The only requirement is that we believe and are willing to humble ourselves, acknowledging our sin and our need, and believe the gospel as the Bible teaches! We must confess Christ as Lord, Messiah, and Savior and believe in our hearts that God has raised Christ from the dead. (Romans 10:9-10)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Jesus cares for His own and Jesus is the ONLY WAY to the Father!
Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me alone, but in the One who sent Me. And whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness. John 12:44-46
Jesus said to them, “I assure you: Before Abraham was, I am. John 8:58
THE LESSON OF THE BRONZE SERPENT
In Numbers 21, we see that the Israelites complained about their circumstances and YHWH sent fiery snakes into their midst. When they were bitten they died. They actually repented and cried out to Moses. Here is what happened:
So the LORD (YHWH) sent venomous snakes among the people, and many of the Israelites were bitten and died. Then the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the LORD (YHWH) and against you. Intercede with the LORD (YHWH) to take the snakes away from us.” So Moses interceded for the people. Then the LORD (YHWH) said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and mount it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and mounted it on a pole. If anyone who was bitten looked at the bronze snake, he would live. Numbers 21:6-9
This was a lesson Jesus Christ used to teach us how we are to look to Him and be saved.
Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. (Genesis 22:1-10; Romans 5:6-11) For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. John 3:14-19
Look to Jesus and live!
