How Does God View Faith?

The word faith occurs twice in the Old Testament. Faith, πίστις (pistis), is found 241 times in the New Testament. This doesn’t include the verses with the words trust or faithfulness.

I am convinced faith was always just as important to YHWH as it is today. God never changes. Except for a mediator and for His Name’s sake, God would have ended the nation of Israel prior to their reaching the promised land of Canaan due to their unbelief or lack of faith in Him. Exodus 32:10, Numbers 14:12. Instead, the Israelites wandered in the wilderness 40 years due to their lack of faith and unwillingness to obey.

The word ‘faith’ appears more often in the New Testament because the New Covenant is based on faith. In Hebrews Chapter 8, the New Covenant is described. The writer of Hebrews points out in Hebrews 4:2 that the gospel has no benefit  to those who are without faith:

For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

By faith we please God –

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6

By faith our hearts are purified –

And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Acts 15:8-9

By faith we are saved –

And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Luke 7:50

By faith we are justified-

Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faithwithout the deeds of the law. Romans 3:28

By faith we have access to God’s grace –

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:2

By faith we walk –

For we walk by faith, not by sight:.. 2 Corinthians 5:7

By faith we become children of God –

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26

By faith we are imputed with righteousness –

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:Philippians 3:9

By faith we live –

Now the just shall live by faith…Hebrews 10:38

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

By faith we are able to understand –

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 11:3

Because of their faith, God commended Abel, Enoch, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Barak, Samson, Gideon, Jephthah, David, Samuel, the Israelites who crossed the Red Sea, and prophets in the New Testament. See Hebrews 11

Certainly we should pay closer attention to God’s Word. He says that without faith it is IMPOSSIBLE to please Him!
