We are actually given the names YHWH, I Am, and Yeshua (Jesus) the Christ when referring to the fullness of God. Yet millions insist on calling our Creator ‘Jehovah.’
Why I seriously Question Stating Emphatically That God’s Name Is Jehovah
Jehovah isn’t found in the Bible. Men decided to give this pronunciation to God’s name. Men chose the name Jehovah. Then a group of people out of an organization called Watchtower stated emphatically that God’s name is Jehovah and only those who use that name are saved. (I understand that they have since recanted on the pronunciation being correct, but continue to use it and claim this Jehovah works only through their organization rather than the body of Christ Jesus.) The word of God makes no mention of anything other than Christ’s Church.
The Bible States
Written in the Old Testament…
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.'” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. Exodus 3:14-15
God spoke further to Moses and said to him, “I am YHWH and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, YHWH I did not make Myself known to them. “I also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they sojourned.…Exodus 6:2-4
I am YHWH [the LORD]; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.” –Isaiah 42:8
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18
Why I Think the Pronunciation ‘Jehovah’ Could Be Wrong!
Almighty God reveals truth to mankind. He allowed the pronunciation to be lost. Men decided to put the vowels in, rather than use the name I Am, or God, Father, or Lord.
Man really does not know if the pronunciation of YHWH should be Yehovah, Yahweh, Jehovah or maybe something else. God did not preserve that information for us. I can’t help but remember that…
Watchtower organization has a track record for getting things wrong. God doesn’t get anything wrong. The WBTS has repeatedly rewritten doctrine and taught their members the end would come in certain years, only to be proven wrong. So who is directing this organization?
THE NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES
Christ told us to pray to our Father in heaven! Since God allowed the pronunciation of YHWH to be lost, but gave us the name of Christ and exalted Christ Jesus name above all names, we must consider why.
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given Him a name which is above every name: Philippians 2:9
And when you pray say, ‘Our Father who is in heaven..’ Matthew 6:8
God’s name and Christ’s new name will be revealed when New Jerusalem comes down.
‘He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name. Revelation 3:12
WATCHTOWER ALSO FAILS TO TEACH THE TRUE GOSPEL
The gospel Watchtower preaches is not the gospel Paul, John, and Peter preached. In their own words, here is the gospel according to Watchtower: “Let the honest-hearted person compare the kind of preaching of the gospel of the Kingdom done by the religious systems of Christendom during all the centuries with that done by Jehovah’s Witnesses since the end of World War I in 1918. They are not one and the same kind. That of Jehovah’s Witnesses is really “gospel,” or “good news,” as of God’s heavenly kingdom that was established by the enthronement of his Son Jesus Christ at the end of the Gentile Times in 1914.”
The true gospel according to Paul is: 1 Corinthians 15:1-5 “Dear friends, let me give you clearly the heart of the gospel that I’ve preached to you—the good news that you have heartily received and on which you stand. 2 For it is through the revelation of the gospel that you are being saved, if you fasten your life firmly to the message I’ve taught you, unless you have believed in vain. 3 For I have shared with you what I have received and what is of utmost importance:
The Messiah died for our sins,
fulfilling the prophecies of the Scriptures.
4 He was buried in a tomb
and was raised from the dead after three days,
as foretold in the Scriptures.
5 Then he appeared to Peter the Rock
and to the twelve apostles.
The gospel according to Peter: Acts 2:“Men of Israel, listen to these words: This Jesus the Nazarene was a man pointed out to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through Him, just as you yourselves know. Though He was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail Him to a cross and kill Him. God raised Him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it…God has resurrected this Jesus. We are all witnesses of this. Therefore, since He has been exalted to the right hand of God and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, He has poured out what you both see and hear…“Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah! ” Acts 2:22-24, 32-33, 36 HCSB
John’s testimony concerning Jesus:“He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God. The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:11-14 HCSB
Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.”Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”…
“Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” John 20:27-31
Perhaps Jehovah is the proper pronunciation of YHWH, however…
Would YHWH reveal the pronunciation of His name to an organization that refuses to teach the gospel of life in Jesus name?
Obedience Requires Staying With What We Know
I see no way to know for certain about the name Jehovah. Certainly Jesus said we should pray to, “Our Father” and be baptized in the NAME of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The names given to us are YHWH, I AM, Father, Jesus and HolySpirit of God. I really see no reason for going beyond what God has given to us. We cannot go wrong with the Names given to us in the Bible .
YHVH – YHWH Is Not Jehovah
