About the Church…

THE CHURCH

Church – ἐκκλησία – ekklēsia – a congregation or body of believers who have trusted the Lord Jesus Christ and follow Him – See Church Also Congregation

The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. Revelation 1:20

““And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus responded, “Simon son of Jonah, you are blessed because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the forces of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth is already bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth is already loosed in heaven.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16:16-19‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

WHAT THE CHURCH IS NOT

Several  serious misconceptions and errors should be addressed before our study begins. Many people see a beautiful building where the church meets and believe they are looking at the church.  No!

The church is not a building made my human hands.

As we saw in the verse from Matthew, Christ the Lord built His church.

The second misconception, and one much more deadly, is that it is an organization run by humans that humans can ‘join.’ No!

The church is not a human run organization.

Those who believe this are actually worshiping the organization they serve and obey.

The church is not a religion.

Religions may have congregations that meet, but to be a part of the true Church, Christ must be the head and members are received on the basis of faith. No other person can head Christ’s body! Only believers in the gospel are accepted as we will see.

THE ESTABLISHING OF THE CHURCH

We have seen that the Bible teaches the church is the body of Jesus Christ, established by Him. It consist of believers appointed by the Holy Spirit as overseers. Christ is the head. The head controls the body.

Now we look at how He established His church! In Acts we learn that we who are members were bought with Christ’s blood. Christ is called God here!

“Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock that the Holy Spirit has appointed you to as overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭20:28‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

BECOME A PART OF THE TRUE CHURCH

So how do we become a part of this established body?

Notice how the first members became a part of the true church on the day of Pentecost…

“So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3,000 people were added to them.

Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple complex, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with a joyful and humble attitude, praising God and having favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to them those who were being saved.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:41, 46-47‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Those who believe the message and were baptized were added by the Holy Spirit. What message? The message that that Christ, the Messiah, had come into the world to save men from sin. The message that Peter preached. The message or gospel of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ and His resurrection.

THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH

A beautiful message to all Christians is this…

”… Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the word. He did this to present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and blameless.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:25-27‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

We do have obligations as members of Christ’s body! We are to care for one another, to feed and care for widows, orphans, and those in need, to allow pastors to preach the word freely, to support the pastors financially and to continue to meet together to observe the Lord’s communion supper until He returns and to pray for each other and especially the sick. The primary purpose is to see that Christ has preeminence in ALL things! Book of Acts, 1 Corinthians 11:24-27, 1 Timothy 5, James 5:14

And He (Christ Jesus)is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Ep 5:25

THE FUTURE FOR CHURCH MEMBERS

Christ will return for His body and we will be gathered to Him prior to the last days.

“We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. Since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, in the same way God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus. For we say this to you by a revelation from the Lord: We who are still alive at the Lord’s coming will certainly have no advantage over those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are still alive will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭4:13-18‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Our names are written in heaven…and we receive a Kingdom..

“But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel…Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:22-25, 28-29‬ ‭KJV‬‬

In the book of The Revelation of Jesus Christ, the Lord teaches what lies ahead for those in the church who  are overcomers. One might question how a person could be a member of the church without being an overcomer. John teaches us who will overcome.

“For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:4-5‬ ‭

Will anyone be added to the church who doesn’t have faith and believe? Not according to Peter. There are, however, many who may think they have been added. Perhaps the Lord is speaking to all who are in attendance so that we might examine ourselves to be sure we are in the faith. Those who are have great promises to look forward to and at the end, eternal life in God’s Kingdom.

THE CHURCH IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION

“And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭1:17-20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.”

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And I will give him the morning star.”

To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.”
