GOD PROMISES A GREATER PROPHET THAN MOSES WOULD COME
No created being could do what Christ has done – He serves as the last Prophet, our eternal High Priest, and King!
YHWH spoke through Moses and Moses wrote His words and prophecy in Deuteronomy 18. Today he speaks through His Son.
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him.”… “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. I will hold accountable whoever does not listen to My words that he speaks in My name. But the prophet who dares to speak a message in My name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods — that prophet must die.’”
Deuteronomy 18:15 HCSB
Deuteronomy 18:158-20 HCSB
“And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.”
Joshua 3:17 KJV
MOSES WAS A GREAT PROPHET
Moses was a great prophet, but he was only a man. As Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, through the wilderness he was a prophet who was allowed to go up onto the mountain and speak with God. God entrusted Moses with the ten great commandments. The Israelites saw the fire and were afraid. Moses face shone from God’s glory and had to be veiled for a time after his return.
“As Moses descended from Mount Sinai — with the two tablets of the testimony in his hands as he descended the mountain — he did not realize that the skin of his face shone as a result of his speaking with the Lord.
When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. But whenever Moses went before the Lord to speak with Him, he would remove the veil until he came out. After he came out, he would tell the Israelites what he had been commanded, and the Israelites would see that Moses’ face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil over his face again until he went to speak with the Lord.”
Exodus 34:29, 33-35 HCSB
Moses was not a sinless, eternal prophet. His disobedience and an act of anger prevented him from entering Canaan – the land promised to Abraham and his descendants. After Moses, God raised up many prophets. None were sinless or eternal until Jesus came.
JESUS IS THE GREATER PROPHET
Jesus is like Moses in several ways. He came born of a woman in a body of flesh, an Israelite and was from “among the brethren.” Yet He is Creator, not creature. Jesus is the express image of of God and is seated in Heaven.
For Jesus has been counted worthy of greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. Hebrews 3:3
“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son”?”
Hebrews 1:1-5 NKJV
WHY DO WE NEED A GREATER PROPHET?
Moses led Israel out of physical slavery. Christ leads us out of slavery to sin. He is like Moses in He that leads people out of captivity as Moses did. Egypt had taken Israel captive physically. Satan has taken the word into spiritual captivity. Jesus left heaven’s glory and His own glory He shared with the Father that we might go free and enter the eternal promised land. Jesus is the greater prophet! We who follow Christ are no longer captives to sin and Satan.
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
John 8:36 KJV
“But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.”
Ephesians 4:7-8 KJV
Today, God speaks through His Son. Hear Him while there is still time.
