Brokenness – by Nancy Demoss

Nancy Leigh Demoss has written a book called Brokenness.  It is an excellent reminder of the teachings we find in God’s word on humility and how God regards pride.

…for God resist the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 1 Peter 5:5

God actually fights against us when we are proud, but there is an important lesson we can learn from Gideon. When he was hiding in a wine cellar threshing wheat, God found him and called him a “Mighty man of valor”. Apparently he had been praying for help from the Lord.  Remember the story in the book of Judges that…

“..while his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites.”

God took a man who was hiding, who felt he could do nothing, and used him and a small army of three hundred men to confuse and defeat the army of the Midianites who had been abusing the children of God for some time. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.

Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God and he will exalt you in due time.   1 Peter 5:6

No problem is too big for God when we get out of His way and trust Him to fight for us.

God used Gideon when he obeyed and the entire Medianite army defeated themselves by fighting against each other in confusion. All Gideon had to do was surround their camp with 300 faithful men and pitchers with torches in them. They yelled, “the sword of the Lord and Gideon” and the Midianties thought a large army was in their midst and started killing their own men and running away.

The humble heart pleases God. It is told to us over and over and over in the Bible.

Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor. Proverbs 18:12

The lessons the Bible has on humility and brokenness are throughout the scriptures. As  Nancy stated:

Nancy DeMoss: “Blessed,” happy, to be envied “are those who mourn: for they,” those who mourn over their sin, those who grieve over that which grieves the heart of God, “they will experience the comfort that only God can give” (Matthew 5:4 paraphrased). We hear those verses and think of many others like them in the Scripture. What is the kind of heart that God revives? The heart that God revives is the broken, the contrite, the humble heart.
